Innovation and New Product Development in a Lean Enterprise
No company can afford to waste its resources both human and financial. Therefore each new product should be a winner on the market. In order to achieve this result it is necessary to follow a methodology based on the following principles: encourage creativity at all levels; involve in the conception phase all functions in order to understand since the very beginning opportunities, risks and problems, provide clear specifications to those who have the task to design the product.
Once new products have been identified it is essential to follow a correct methodology in order to pass, in the shortest possible time, from the idea to a product ready to be produced and sold on the market: there must be a valid project leader, the project should be accurately planned and controlled, all those interested to the new products (not only people in Technical department) are to be involved in the project, all those involved in the project should share the culture of “variety reduction” (diversification of finished products matched with the highest possible standardization of components and sub-assemblies), all those involved in the project should share the culture of “Target Cost” (prices are fixed by the market and the company should target its costs so as to get a profit from those prices)
Measuring performances is essential to maintain a continuous improvement. This principle does not apply only to manufacturing but also to R&D and Product development, areas that traditionally are regarded as impossible to evaluate through measures of efficiency and effectiveness. Our experience tells us that this is not the case and that the performances of these areas can be easily measured.
